  IX. Bears in Desert Places
  That fall we found bears in desert places;
They were lost, but we knew where we were
And sent them north to seek their fortune.
The desert was our home so briefly; soon
We too were going north, turning our fur
Against the gathering cold, covering faces,
Driven back to what we owned. Later, traces
Of the desert surface here and there: a vial
Of red sand, posed pictures, souvenirs.
Surrounded by the cliffs, we had no fears
That night we wished up the moon, a trial
Of love, that magic trick. It lit our faces.
Our magic done, we turned to city cares;
We waited weeks; no news from the bears.
