In Summer's Heat |
|
In summer's heat we swim upon each other
Through the night, bone to bone; reach other
Countries only we inhabit; swing, twin birds,
The thermals of our love southward, words
Lofting us together, motion feeding motion
Like a swaying bridge, with no notion
That the words are promises we will not keep.
The words are wishes we will want to keep
But lose, at last, as trees will lose their leaves,
As men their teeth, as women their strong bones.
Bone to bone, our bodies pound like stones,
Sculpt each other in the baking heat.
Weeping what we took for joy, each grieves
Unwanted certainty entrapped in bone and meat.
